Review of MTV VMAs

Disclaimer: There were short performances by lesser-known groups that I have not included here.
This was the first VMA award show that I have seen that did not have a primary host. Different celebrities introduced the awards and the performers.
Ryan Tedder and Logic- They performed their song "One Day." Children came onto the stage during the song with "we are all human beings" t-shirts on. They had clever visuals about border control behind them. This was the only performance of the night with a specifically political message.
Panic! At The Disco- The lead singer had an impressive high note at the bridge, and the band had good energy throughout the performance.
Nicki Minaj- Nicki performed a medley from a different location than the awards show, so the audience saw it through a video screen. The crowd was energetic and jumped. Nicki had serious facial expressions as she rapped and strutted around the stage with gold backup dancers. She performed songs from her new album. Though it was hard for me to understand most of her lyrics, I could tell by her attitude and the response of the audience that she was throwing shade (insulting) other rappers at certain points in the performance.
Jennifer Lopez- J. Lo won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and took the stage for a 10 minute medley of her hits from the early days in her career to now. Early on in the performance, she paused and danced without singing for maybe one or two minutes. Her dancing was impressive in its own right but what kept my attention was that she didn't stop moving throughout the medley. She paused once or twice to add or remove something from her costume, but that was it. J. Lo sang a couple of ballads, but it was mostly fast-paced dance music. In her acceptance speech after the performance, she thanked many people and was grateful for the honor.
Ariana Grande- She sang "God is a Woman." The visuals included obvious imagery from the painting The Last Supper, but all of the dancers on stage were women. This was disturbing to me. The set for this song included a large overhang with columns that looked like a temple.
Meluma- He performed in Spanish, and Camila Cabello spontaneously danced with him as he passed her row in the audience. The dancing on stage gave the performance a sexual nature.
*This next singer is out of order. Shawn Mendes- He hit the high notes well, and rain fell from the ceiling during his performance.
Post Malone, 21 Savage, and Aerosmith- The transition from Post Malone's song to Aerosmith's entrance worked well. From there, Aerosmith brought some intensity to the stage. There were flames in the background, and one of the members smashed his guitar. Unfortunately, it seemed lackluster in a weird way.
